AI Audio Event Detection: How PANNs and Silero VAD Isolate Trailer Impacts

How machine learning separates explosive sound effects from spoken actor dialogue to synthesize crisp haptic curves.

Abstract neural network audio spectrum waveform visualization with glowing magenta and cyan particle points

When a movie trailer is submitted to Aura Version, our creative engineering team rarely receives pristine isolated audio stems (Dialogue, Music, Foley). More often than not, we receive a flattened stereo or 5.1 composite mix. Synthesizing haptics from a flattened mix is notoriously difficult because actor dialogue and background orchestral horns will trigger false vibration bursts.

Silero VAD: Stripping Vocal Speech Masks

To guarantee that human speech never causes buzzing in the user's palms, Haptic Studio runs Silero Voice Activity Detection (VAD). Operating at sub-millisecond latency, Silero generates a binary probability mask of speech presence across the trailer timeline, automatically ducking and muting haptic synthesis during conversational moments.

PANNs: Classifying 527 Sound Event Categories

Once speech is isolated, Pre-trained Audio Neural Networks (PANNs) analyze the remaining soundscape across 527 distinct acoustic classes—identifying explosions, gunshots, sword clashes, thunderclaps, and engine revs with over 94% classification precision. Each identified sound category is mapped to its optimal haptic sharpness profile.
