High speed global optical fiber networks symbolizing video and haptic streaming architecture

Delivering haptic trailers at global scale requires more than sending standalone JSON files alongside a video player. When trailers are streamed over content delivery networks (CDNs) to millions of concurrent users using adaptive bitrate (ABR) protocols like Apple HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) or MPEG-DASH, the haptic data must remain synchronized through network quality changes, bitrate hops, and live seeks.

The Challenge of Multimodal Adaptive Bitrate Streaming

If haptic data is requested as an out-of-band HTTP request while video is chunked into 2-second transport stream (.ts or .fmp4) segments, network jitter quickly decouples the timelines. Aura Version solves this by interleaving compressed binary haptic descriptors directly into the video stream container.

HLS Timed Metadata: Injecting .AHAP Payloads into ID3 Frames

In HLS workflows, we inject custom ID3 `PRIV` (Private) timed metadata frames at each keyframe boundary. As AVPlayer demuxes the video segment, AVPlayerItemMetadataOutput fires delegate callbacks with timestamped haptic commands aligned to the exact PTS frame boundary:

CDN Caching & Cloudflare Edge Delivery Optimization

Because haptic metadata adds less than 1.5 kilobytes per second to the overall video container payload, it introduces virtually zero CDN bandwidth overhead while guaranteeing frame-perfect synchronization across 150+ worldwide edge nodes.
