Cinematic film reel spinning with neon light reflections representing high-energy action pacing

Just as early 3D movies gave audiences headaches by hurling tennis balls and spears into the camera lens in every frame, early attempts at video haptics often gave users numb palms. When skin mechanoreceptors are bombarded continuously without interruption, receptor adaptation sets in within 12 seconds.

What Causes Tactile Sensory Fatigue?

Pacinian corpuscles adapt rapidly to continuous stimuli. If a smartphone motor vibrates continuously for more than 4 seconds, the brain's sensory thalamus suppresses incoming signals as background noise. To preserve the visceral shock of a martial arts kick or car crash, you must strictly preserve tactile silence beforehand.

The 30% Density Rule

In Haptic Studio, our creative rule of thumb is that no more than 30% of a 120-second trailer should have active vibration. The remaining 70% should consist of pure visual and acoustic anticipation. When the final trailer explosion arrives, its perceptual impact will be magnified tenfold.
